Wings Over Socotra

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
(8 days/ 7 nights)

Overview:

Besides its overall natural allure, Socotra is famous worldwide for its extraordinary wealth of unique flora and fauna. With over 800 local plant species, including the renowned Dragon blood tree and numerous endemic animal species, naturalists – especially birdwatchers – rush to explore this still untouched spot of land and uncover its secrets. In 1993, the recorded species reached were 110; 20 years later, they have doubled to 229, including 12 endemic ones that breed solely on this island.

With this carefully curated itinerary, we invite you to explore Socotra's distinct bird and natural life under the expert guidance of Socotra Daher's founder, Ahmed Saeed Sulaiman Abdullah. Prepare your binoculars and cameras, and get ready to tick off your birdwatching list of birds such as the Egyptian Vulture, the Socotra Sparrow, the Socotra White-eye, the Socotra Buzzard, the Socotra Golden-wing Grosbeak and many others.

Trip Leader:

Ahmed Saeed Sulaiman Abdullah is a researcher and expert on the fauna and flora in the Socotra Archipelago, specializing in birds. For over two decades, he has been heading major environmental organizations on the island, and through projects like "Support to the Integrated Program for the Conservation and Development of Socotra Archipelago" he has been actively involved in the local sustainable development and preservation. He participated in the preparation of Socotra's zoning plan, an important tool for environmental activities on the island confirmed by presidential decree, as well as in the organization of pilot, community-based eradication campaigns and awareness activities to protect endemic species from extinction as a result of the introduction of alien species (e.g. Prosopis juliflora and Opuntia stricta, that is, the Prickly Pear). Ahmed also organizes and implements major environment awareness events on Socotra, such as Vulture Awareness Day and Wetlands Day.
Ahmed's invaluable presence throughout the trip will offer the participants expert insight into Socotra's unique environment and an understanding of the island's ongoing preservation activities.
